Remember a time, not that long ago, when the flippety flop of a thong signalled the arrival of a beer-swilling, ciggie-smoking, style-starved yobbo? This stereotype is deeply ingrained in our culture, thanks in part to characters immortalised in the 1970s by comedian Paul Hogan’s Arthur Dunger and the cartoon uber-slob, ”Norm”.
Aussie style, fortunately, has come a long way since then. We’ve ditched the Stubbies and swapped the terry towelling hat for a trilby but the faithful thong has endured. Now a must-have fashion accessory (in truth, most of us have more than one pair), the rubber thong has triumphed over age, gender and social status barriers.
You only need to witness it being worn with the most expensive outfit, or parading around on the feet of the world’s most stylish celebrities – Kate Moss, Nicole Richie and Jen Hawkins – for proof. And as is the case with all highly coveted fashion items, the thong continues to reinvent itself. This summer it has been embellished with hints of bling, nautical stripes and the colours of carnivale.
”In recent years, particularly in the Australian market, thongs have become a core part of everyone’s wardrobe, whether you’re in the youth category or a designer shopper who wears $1000 Givenchy heels,” says the business manager of footwear and accessories for Myer, Joanne Mercer, who admits they are one of the highest-volume sellers in footwear.
