Portuguese for ‘Hawaiians’, Havaianas thongs were first conceived back in 1962, with their original design based on the Japanese Zōri sandals. Shortly after, their popularity in the beach and outdoors-obsessed Brazil began to explode. Initially, the sandals were only issued in two flavours; blue and white, but a manufacturing malfunction led to the creation of green Havaianas. The response from consumers was so encouraging that it prompted the company to begin producing them in all different types of colours.

Whilst Havaianas thongs remained a hugely popular and omnipresent force of nature throughout Brazil, it wasn’t until the late 90’s that the brand began to receive international recognition and publicity. This wasn’t achieved through elaborate and expensive marketing campaigns but simply by tourists coming to Brazil and spotting the irresistible footwear before buying them and taking them back home to their native countries. Before long, even luxury fashion brands like Jean Paul Gaultier began to take notice. Fast forward to the present day and the Havaianas label is known throughout the world.
